His face. I can never get over it.

Mako’s face is so incredibly soft and gentle when he confesses, but it also has a tinge of guilt attached to it which is kind of heartbreaking. I have so many feels for the boy here. 

I don’t think the scenario is how he wanted to tell Korra how he felt at all. I understand he confessed when he did because he wanted her to know just how important she is to him in that moment when she was feeling completely worthless. He wanted to console her with that. But I think he would have preferred another occasion when it wouldn’t have been tainted with the sad situation.

Mostly though (and as I’ve said before), I think he feels ashamed or even guilty about not realizing he loved her sooner, and all the problems he’s caused because of not understanding it. He made his relationship with Korra unnecessarily difficult at times and I’m sure in retrospect that was the last thing he ever wanted to do, and he dragged Asami along for way too long and you know he feels guilty about that. I think maybe he feels like he’s failed Korra in a way, but he wants to make it right. So he musters the courage to confess.

And just mustering up that courage could also be why he looks like a scared little boy. I don’t think he’s ever said “I love you” to anyone in a romantic way before. He seems so vulnerable and genuine. His confession really does come from the heart. He’s acting on his feelings instead of thinking things through and that’s a new development in his life altogether.
